BOOK REVIEW: Ana Be Still from R. Holland

While attending a book signing in Tyler, Texas in August I picked up some books for myself as a treat. I spoke with other authors learning about their works and was instantly intrigued by the author known as R. Holland. Her books set up on her table called out to me making me choose between series she had out.

Ana Be Still caught my attention the most as it was paranormal through and through, perfect for me.

recommended for ages 19 and up due to gory and graphic language.

Book One: Deathly Revelations

What would you do if you woke up one morning and the world was changed, never to be the same again?

Analisa Still has just found out that everything she thought she knew about her life was a lie. To make matters worse, her parents have taken her to a compound for training. Total strangers seem to know more about who she is, what she is, and what she was born to do than she does. And someone at the compound wants her dead. When the compound is attacked and the world overrun with vampires (and something else), Ana is forced to team up with the unlikeliest of allies. Thinking her betrothed is dead, Ana soon falls in love with one of her vampire comrades all while vowing to kill the vampires that killed her sister.

Book Two: Deathly Desires

After finding out who really killed her sister, 19 year old Ana Still goes looking for revenge. With the help of her new love Simon, Ana looks for any information on her birth parents thinking this will help her defeat them. Ana and Simon soon have to team up with others to kill the creatures that lurk in the night and lust for Ana’s blood. When Ana realizes that someone close to her she once thought was dead is still alive, she must figure out if they will be a tremendous help or hindrance in getting her vengeance and ridding the world of the flesh-eating creatures.

Book Three: Deathly Decisions

What would you do if the one you love is taken from you? And another one you once loved is with you every step of the way to bring him back?

As Simon is taken and creatures continue to spread all over the globe, Ana and her team is forced to fight them off and reach Simon in time. But now, even the weather is working against them making their journey difficult. With Eric at her side and protecting her every step of the way, Ana is forced to deal with feelings once felt but never gone. When Ana and the group arrive at the White House, they soon realize everything is not as it seems and there is a traitor in the midst.

Either way:
Lives will be lost
Friendships will be made
Love will be restored
And of course, Vengeance will be had!

Meeting the author before reading the book was a nice change of pace considering we usually do it in the opposite order. But here are my thoughts on books 1-3 in the Ana Be Still series.

R. Holland has managed to create modern day societies where vampires, seekers, and humans live side by side yet the humans do not know it. You’ve read the story types before where the girl gets the guy they battle against the world and live happily ever after. Well, this is not that!

Here Holland has created a world enemies join to become allies to fight a common threat. While you have the main character who thinks she has gotten the guy of her dreams, it’s not really that easy. As for a happily ever after, well… again that is not necessarily what happens.

Here is what Holland did – she created characters that are very realistic in their behaviors, cultural beliefs, and emotions! She has intertwined pasts with futures making the present a complex puzzle. Her writing has a steady flow never lulling you into boredom.

I can say the author kept me wanting to the turn the pages and continue to read until I ran out of both pages and words.

I agree with the age restrictions and believe the reader should be 19 or older due to gore and graphic scenes. I would recommend this series to anyone who wants a good intense series with vampires, seekers, humans, and something else that I am not sure what they are other than a mix of zombie and vampire.  I can with ease give Holland 4.5 stars for her work. Ready for book 4 now!

Author of young adult/fantasy / paranormal as well as poetry and more.
